What is a Daith piercing ?

A Daith piercing is an ear piercing that passes through the
innermost cartilage fold of the ear, known as the crus of the helix. The term
"Daith" has its origins in Jewish culture. While traditionally
pronounced as "faith," some people now pronounce it as
"doth,".

Typically, a daith piercing is done using a 16 gauge needle,
which is approximately 1.2mm thick. However, there may be variations depending
on your piercer's preference or your ear anatomy. If you're unsure about the
gauge of your piercing, it's best to consult your piercer. In terms of hoop
sizes, most daith piercings can accommodate inner diameters ranging from 8mm to
10mm, find out more here.

The choice of which ear to pierce largely depends on
personal preference, but some suggest having it done on the side of the head
that experiences the most migraine pain.

Is Daith piercing painful?

Getting a Daith piercing can seem daunting, especially if
you're concerned about the pain and safety of the procedure. Rest assured,
while Daith piercings can be painful due to the thickness of the cartilage,
they are not the most painful piercing you can get (not sure if that
helps!).

Is Daith piercing safe?

Daith piercings are generally considered safe when performed
by a professional piercer in a clean, sterile environment. Like any piercing,
there are risks of infection and complications, but these can be minimized by
following proper aftercare instructions and choosing a reputable piercer. If
you're considering getting a Daith piercing, it's essential to do your
research, find a skilled piercer, and communicate any concerns or questions you
may have before proceeding.

How long does it typically take for a Daith piercing to
heal?

A Daith piercing typically requires a longer healing period,
spanning up to 9 months, owing to the denser cartilage in the ear. To gauge if
your Daith piercing has fully healed, look for signs such as the absence of
discharge or redness, minimal tenderness upon touch, and loose movement of the jewellery.

How to clean my Daith piercing?

To promote healing after getting a daith piercing, it's
crucial to adhere to a proper aftercare routine.

Always
start by washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching
your piercing.

Apply
a saline soaked gauze pad to the piercing and hold it there for about 5
minutes. This helps cleanse the piercing and promote healing

Avoid
moving or rotating the piercing while cleaning to prevent irritation.

 If
there's any crusted buildup around the piercing, allow the saline solution
to soften it. Then, gently wipe away the softened buildup with the soaked
gauze pad. Be careful not to apply too much pressure or tug on the
piercing.

After
cleaning, gently pat the area dry with disposable paper products, such as
paper towels or tissues.

Avoidance Measures:

Avoid
rotating or twisting the jewelry, as this can interfere with the healing
process.

Avoid
using harsh soaps or products with dyes or fragrances.

What to know before getting a Daith piercing?

It's important to wait until your daith piercing is fully
healed before changing the jewelry. Changing it too soon can disrupt the
healing process and increase the risk of infection. Typically, it's best to
wait at least a year before switching to different jewelry styles. If you
experience any issues with the size, style, or material of your current
jewelry, consult with a professional piercer for assistance.

During the healing process, it's essential to take
precautions while sleeping to prevent irritation or injury to the piercing.
Keep your bedding clean and change it regularly to avoid transferring bacteria
to the piercing. If you've had your ear pierced, try to sleep on your back to
minimize pressure on the piercing. Alternatively, use a U-shaped travel neck
pillow to comfortably sleep on your side while keeping your ear
protected.

Does Daith piercing help with anything?

While some practitioners of auriculotherapy suggest that
daith piercings may target pressure points, potentially aiding in migraine
reduction and stress relief, empirical evidence supporting these claims remains
limited.

What jewellery is best for a Daith piercing?

The best jewellery for a daith piercing includes captive
bead rings (CBRs), seamless hoops, and circular barbells. These types of jewellery
complement the natural curve of the daith and are less likely to irritate the
piercing. It's essential to choose high-quality materials such as titanium,
gold, or surgical steel to reduce the risk of allergic reactions or infections.
Some people also opt for heart-shaped rings for a more decorative look.

What size jewellery for a Daith piercing?

The standard size for daith piercing jewellery is 16 gauge
(1.2mm), with an inner diameter that usually ranges from 8mm to 10mm. The
specific size chosen depends on the individual's ear anatomy and personal
preference. A snug fit is ideal for preventing movement that could irritate the
piercing, while a slightly larger size might be chosen for ease of insertion
and removal.

Is an 8mm or 10mm better for a Daith piercing?

Choosing between 8mm and 10mm for a daith piercing depends
on the desired fit and comfort. 8mm offers a snug, close-fitting look that hugs
the inner cartilage, reducing the chance of snagging. It is often preferred by
those who want a minimalistic style. On the other hand, 10mm provides a
slightly looser fit, allowing more movement and making the jewellery more
visible. This size is better for individuals with larger or thicker cartilage.
