Gypsy Rings: All About this Timeless Style
Have you heard of a gypsy ring? Chances are you’re familiar with the jewellery style, even if you don’t know the name – as they date back more than a century. In this blog, explore the history, design, and symbolism behind this ring style that’s as timeless as it is unique.
What is a gypsy ring, and where did they originate?
‘Gypsy ring’ is the popular name for what’s technically known as a ‘flush mount’ ring. It’s a type of bezel set ring which features gemstones or diamonds that are set flush within the ring band, creating the seamless appearance of embedded stones.
The gypsy ring first emerged during the Victorian Era, as a uniquely contemporary alternative to the ornate and ostentatious styles that were popular at the time. The gypsy ring style was most popular among men initially, and they remain a versatile, gender-neutral piece to this day.

Why is it called a gypsy ring?
Despite what you might assume from its name, gypsy rings are not associated with Traveller cultures as far as we know, but instead emerged amongst the Victorian aristocracy. However, there are a few theories about the origin of the name which do take inspiration from these cultures’ nomadic ways. One belief is that the term is based on the way the setting makes the stones appear to ‘wander’ or ‘float’ in the ring.

Another, much less romantic idea is that the gypsy ring setting became popular among the upper class of the Victorian Era, because the setting style made their fabulous diamonds, sapphires, and rubies appear a little more subtle and thus less appealing to roadway thieves on their travels.

What’s the symbolism behind gypsy rings?
Gypsy rings have a depth of meaning, thanks to their origin in the Victorian period when jewellery was usually worn and given with great symbolism.
While initially worn by men, the gypsy ring style soon became popular among women too. They were often given as friendship bands, or as betrothal rings, bestowing gypsy rings with deep associations with love, commitment, and loyalty.
With their flush mount setting, the stones in gypsy rings are protected by the ring band; making them much less prone to snagging than other types of settings. For this reason, these rings are also associated with protection and strength, making them a beautiful piece to gift yourself as you mark a new milestone or want to remind yourself of all that you’re capable of; or as a meaningful gift for someone you love.
